As we head into 2018, here are the beauty fads to hold on to and the ones to leave behind as the clock strikes 12
THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY in 2017 thrived on revolutionary innovations. From Rihanna dropping her highly anticipated Fenty Beauty—with 40 shades of foundations, the brand was awarded the title of ‘Invention of the Year’—to Kim Kardashian West’s KKW Beauty contour kits, there appears to be something for everyone.
HOLD ON: OH SO GRAPHIC!
Many new and exciting make-up trends made an impact in 2017. Sargam Dhawan, Director, Paul Penders Botanicals, India, recalls, “There was a flurry of eyeliners in varying shapes, designed to make a statement yet retain a minimalistic vibe.” Achieve this ultra-mod look by merging seasonal hues like gold, bronze and other metallic eyeshadow and applying them on the upper and lower lash lines.
HOLD ON: PIERCE FOR FIERCE
Renowned for her trendsetting ways, Kardashian West is no stranger to using social media to her advantage. “This summer, we saw the social media queen sport a faux lip piercing and almost instantly, legions of beauty fans followed suit,” says Ayesha Nichani, make-up expert at MyGlamm. If you want to test the waters, Nichani recommends a few tricks. “Draw a vertical metallic stripe across your lower lip to create a faux lip ring illusion and voilà!” she says.
HOLD ON: SPACE ODYSSEY
A modern twist on the classic eyeliner, it’s also known as the ‘inner corner wing’. Nichani says, “Andrew Gallimore, NARS’ UK make-up artist ambassador, demonstrated this look at designer David Koma’s London Fashion Week AW 16 show, and it was an absolute winner! It is a classy way to elongate the eyes without making it seem too dramatic. ”To replicate this look, accentuate the inner corner of your eyes as opposed to the usual outer edges; the result, a sci-fi-like style that will continue to win hearts in 2018.
DITCH: DON’T MESS WITH THAT BROW!
The ‘feather brow’ was one of the most talked-about trends of 2017.This infamous trend was started by Finnish makeup artist, Stella Sironen, as a joke—and we hope we’ve seen the last of it! Following the feathered brows trend was the squiggly brow trend started by Promise Tamang after she saw a Photoshopped version of the brows online. “Let’s just say that squiggles belong on paper and far from our faces,” Nichani says.
DITCH: OVERDRAWN AND GONE
Another trend that needs to be forgotten, according to Dhawan, are overdrawn black eyebrows with a boxy finish. She says, “Our brows frame and structure our eyes. Hence, it is important to shape the brows proportionally and give them a seamless yet natural finish.”
DITCH: BAKED AND FORGOTTEN
2018 will say goodbye to strongly baked contour. “With high definition make-up taking over and flawless skin favoured by every bride, there will be no room for cakey made-up faces in 2018,” Kochhar states.
HOLD ON: INTO THE GLOSS
“Highlighting and strobing were big in 2017 and will continue to make waves in 2018 as well,” says Samantha Kochhar, Deputy Chief Expert World Hairdressing. Whether it’s applied on your eyes, lips or cheekbones, glitter and gloss are here to stay. “Glitter eyes are among my favourite trends because make-up genius Pat McGrath relentlessly doused us with glitter and we all fell in love. Glitter lips will still be big in the year to come because why not!” exclaims Elton Fernandez, official make-up artist, Maybelline New York. We guess all that glitters is indeed gold!
