About Me
Kalki through the looking-glass

As we entered Amy Billimoria’s House of Design in Juhu, Mumbai, we knew we were not in Kansas anymore. The store exudes a happy feeling. From the décor of the store to the clothes housed within it, we could tell that this was going to be a departure from a traditional bridal makeover.

About Me
Sonam and Paras Modi share their marriage mantra…

We met at a common friend’s wedding in Lonavla, after which we started meeting almost twice a week with friends. We got along like a house on fire; it felt so comfortable talking to each other, it was like we were long lost friends. The initial courtship felt more like a game of hide and seek. We didn’t want to tell people yet as we were still getting to know each other.

Top 6 things on how to nail the wedding budget

Wedding planner Gurleen M Puri shares a few tricks of the trade to keep your special day from becoming a load on your pocket

The timing

Timing is everything. It would be amazing to get married during the holidays or even on Valentine’s Day or New Year’s Eve—all your relatives are available, everyone can make it, and the date makes it oh-so-special! But in order to get the best deals on venues, hotels, travel and catering, you would be better off picking a flexible date that doesn’t coincide with a holiday.

The venue

You’d much rather make bulk bookings with fewer vendors to stretch your budget and get the best deals. For example, just pick one hotel where your guests can stay and you can host events at different locations within the same hotel, like the banquet hall, rooftop, outdoor garden and other smaller venues.

The decor

Work with décor specialists who effectively re-organise decorative elements in new ways to save cost. Alternatively, if you pick one venue for all your functions, the transit cost for the décor elements reduces substantially.

It is about you

The sky is the limit at showing your guests a good time, but a wedding is about a happy start to a new life. Therefore, choose a celebration that will be personal and meaningful to you. Spend money on the things that matter to you, but also have an open mind.

If you’re not a big fan of flowers, make a statement with other soft touches. If you don’t like formal dining, make do with casual appetisers or snacks. If you don’t have your heart set on live music, opt for a DJ or even a great playlist on your iPod. It’s never worth splurging on something that you think might impress your guests, but won’t impress you on the day.

Quality over quantity

Your functions should reflect your spouse’s and your individual style. Take the time to figure out special, but simple ways in which you can make each and every guest feel welcome, taken care of and genuinely a part of the family.

The planner

The task of planning an Indian wedding is an elaborate and complex job, and an experienced wedding planner can advise families on how to perfectly plan, design and execute spectacular events and weddings. Not only do they take care of all the functions and other aspects, but if something were to go wrong, they would have a backup. So with that burden taken care of, your relatives and you, can actually enjoy your special day and make it memorable.
