Kalki through the looking-glass

As we entered Amy Billimoria’s House of Design in Juhu, Mumbai, we knew we were not in Kansas anymore. The store exudes a happy feeling. From the décor of the store to the clothes housed within it, we could tell that this was going to be a departure from a traditional bridal makeover.

About Me
Sonam and Paras Modi share their marriage mantra…

We met at a common friend’s wedding in Lonavla, after which we started meeting almost twice a week with friends. We got along like a house on fire; it felt so comfortable talking to each other, it was like we were long lost friends. The initial courtship felt more like a game of hide and seek. We didn’t want to tell people yet as we were still getting to know each other.

Top 3 fuss-free methods to remove body hair

An inclination to de-fuzz is just what the slovenly need. But, what method does one zero in on to walk down the aisle as the smooth-limbed bride? Here’s the ultimate guide on hair removal methods to bail you out of that hairy situation

WAX IT OFF

What you don’t know

Along with unwanted body hair, classic wax helps remove dead cells and dirt, while also exfoliating the skin. Disha Meher, National Expert-Skin and Nails, Lakmé Salon elaborates, “Flavoured wax is about 50 per cent pain-free as compared to classic wax. It helps remove any tanning on the upper layers of the skin, while giving the skin a radiant shine thereby improving its texture.”

Things to consider

Waxing should not be done on extra loose or extra thin skin or on skin that is overly sensitive or bears abrasions or eruptions. “Always check for any cuts, bruises and open wounds before the service. Always apply pre- and post-wax lotions/products accordingly, ”recommends Meher.

The right time

Waxing should ideally be avoided hours/a day before the wedding as the skin goes into trauma during waxing. “For someone who waxes regularly, set an appointment three to four days before your wedding date,” suggests Meher.

Note this

  • Do not wear tight clothes immediately after waxing.
  • Avoid the application of soap or perfume immediately after waxing.
  • Do not undergo body polishing immediately after waxing.
  • Do not use a razor between two waxing sessions.

LASER EFFECT

What you know

Laser for hair reduction (LHR) offers reduction and not permanent removal of hair. Though some hair may be lost for good, others may thin out to a state of aesthetic appeal hence serving the purpose.

What you don’t know

“Brides suffering from hormonal imbalances like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) may have thick growth over their lower face, chest and abdomen, making this suitable for laser treatment. However, as this growth is under hormonal influence, it may resurge even after optimum results are achieved. This could occur during pregnancy and lactation or if the PCOS is left untreated,” explains Dr Apratim Goel, Dermatologist and Laser Surgeon, Cutis Skin Studio.

Things to consider

Explaining further, Dr Goel asserts, “Post-procedure icing is done to settle any redness. The first session requires a full growth to enable your skin expert to gauge your parameters for treatment.” The right time According to Dr Goel, you should enrol for your laser package as early as 6-12 months before the big day to be virtually hair-free by the time your wedding day is around the corner. “If you have slacked on the sessions and have pending sittings, LHR can be done even a day before the wedding ceremonies commence,” she shares.

Note this

  • Permanent hair reduction is such that the hair once lost doesn’t grow back except over the lower face, around nipples, and midriff, which are under hormonal influence.
  • It is much superior to waxing and threading, as these methods are traumatic to the skin and if done carelessly, can lead to ingrowths. In fact, laser is the one-stop solution to getting rid of them. Furthermore, the friction from regular threading and shaving can lead to pigmentation as well.
  • It is suitable for all age groups and skin types.
  • It doesn’t work on white hair.

CLOSE SHAVE

What you know

Once the celebrations commence and with the number of functions planned, a bride should not have to worry about hair growth.“On one hand, you cannot wait another 15 days for the hair to grow long enough for a wax treatment and on the other, hair removal creams with their chemicals can cause unwanted side effects. This predicament makes the razor a bride’s best friend,” states Dr Rashmi Shetty, Aesthetic Physician and Skincare Expert.

What you don’t know

There’s always been much noise about shaving in the direction of your hair growth.“It is better to shave downward first and then against the direction of hair growth. Remember to never shave in horizontal strokes; doing so could lead to some painful cuts. It is not only important to follow the right technique, but also to apply the right product for an optimum shave,” advises Dr Shetty.

Things to consider

“Shower or bathe before you shave. Hydrating the hair with warm water makes it up to 60 per cent easier to shave. If you are looking forward to a salt bath make sure it is done before the shave. The skin on the freshly shaved body-part is extremely sensitive and dipping it in different kinds of salts will irritate it,” she informs.

The right time

If you are someone who has faster/thicker hair growth, it’s recommended you shave a few hours before the wedding. “If you have little to fine hair on your body, then you can either shave three to four days before the wedding or on the day itself,” she signs off.

Note this

The key to make it last is to not only get as close a shave as possible, but also to make sure that you do not slice your skin. Therefore, it is important to use a good quality blade with a flexible head and rounded corners. If you have a tendency for quick/thick hair growth, see your dermatologist for any skin-related issue that can then be taken care of with the right help and guidance. Use shaving as the only hair removal method till then.
