Determined to make her dreams come true through sheer will and hard work, Parineeti Chopra is winning big—at life and at the movies
Between signing big Bollywood projects and playing bridesmaid at the wedding of the season, Parineeti Chopra has had a whirlwind year. A glimpse at her movie roster suggests that this fast-paced excitement will continue unabated. She states, “I have Jabariya Jodi—a quirky romantic comedy alongside Sidharth Malhotra. Then there’s Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar by filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee that features me and Arjun Kapoor. Simultaneously, I am prepping for Saina Nehwal’s biopic.” The pressure is likely to mount as she trains to serve us with a smashing hit in her first ever biography, but Parineeti has her game face on. She remarks, “Portraying Saina (Nehwal) on the big screen is like a dream come true; she is a national icon and a true inspiration. Right now, I am concentrating on doing justice to the director’s vision, while respectfully relaying Saina’s success story and convincingly channelling her persona on-screen.”
At no point does the fact that we’re spending the day aboard a cruise liner docked on the calming waters of the Arabian Sea cause her to lose momentum. There’s no time for distractions; but every now and then, she does sneak in a moment to smile at the view and appreciate the perks of her job. “Travel keeps me calm and helps me see the larger picture. It also keeps me focused. I love short getaways, especially to islands and places by the seaside. I find it exhilarating and never tire of it. Travel is my outlet; it’s my zone of peace and happiness. I make it a point to see at least three to four new countries every year. This year, I’m hoping to explore different regions of Scandinavia,” she shares.

Travel was at the heart of the year’s biggest crossover weddings—that of her cousin Priyanka Chopra to Nick Jonas. From the fairy-tale destination to the setup, Parineeti is still undecided over her favourite moment from the grand celebrations. “I loved the sangeet a lot. Our family along with the Jonases participated in the song-and-dance routine and they loved dancing to Indian film songs. Everyone just let their hair down, while dressed in the finest Indian wear.” While performing her bridesmaid duties, Parineeti found plenty to inspire her for her big day. “While I wouldn’t borrow too much from their celebrations, I would love to recreate the atmosphere of uninhibited fun and enjoyment with family that we had,” she confides. Parineeti’s sunny disposition and practical approach have added to her métier, which in turn have driven her progression in Bollywood. She’s displayed versatility and an inclination for quality over quantity. “The way I see it, a role should be remembered by audiences. It should add value to the story; the length of the role is immaterial. Kesari (2019), for instance, was one of those films where I didn’t assess my screen time. I feel the need to support good stories in whatever capacity possible. I believe in following my heart, making the right choices and working hard—regardless of results.”
Right now, though she’s keeping pace with a manic schedule, she’s not losing much sleep over it. After all, her ambition to be a part of good films that stand the test of time and a desire to keep her fans entertained are what keep her motivated. “This is a wonderful time to be an actor in India because substantial roles, characters closer to real life and inspiring stories are the new norm. Audiences are accepting experimental, novel ideas and non-typical filmmaking. Leading women have taken this change forward by working in challenging, inspiring films. It’s great for creativity and growth,” she declares.

Her job as an actor has led her to some of the best locations across the planet, so I ask, “If you were to pick one place that is best suited for a destination wedding, what would it be?” Her reply comes quick: “Maldives! I would love to take my friends for a scuba diving-themed wedding.” However, she’s quick to state that she has no plans of marrying right now. “But, I would love to have a destination wedding in a setting that is pristine, beautiful and away from the clamour of a city,” she smiles.
Amid all the hustling, for now, Parineeti’s happy place is a departure from the usual. She quips, “It’s the airport (laughs). Taking a break from the job is just as important as the job itself.”
Whether it’s the ocean or the movies, Parineeti appears ready to dive in.
