Adding a jolt of energy and causing quite a stir, neon make-up has become 2019’s breakthrough beauty trend. Take notes as experts get you clued in to the buzz; after all, it’s time to give neutral glamour a bright edge
LIGHT IT UP
The neon trend is back and here to stay. “You see it in clothes, make-up, accessories and hair colours. A pop of neon on your eyes or lips can spice up your everyday look. For that matter, a bright nail colour, too, creates a statement,” shares Anupma Katyal, National Creative Director – Make-up, Lakmé Salon. The neon wave is all about adding freshness to the mundane. “I’ve seen this become a rage among international celebrities and influencers, and I think it’s a trend that everyone can adapt to their own make-up style. From lime-coloured eyeliner to matte violet lipstick—the best way to try this trend is by using a surprising pop of colour in an otherwise understated look,” feels Vineeta Singh, CEO, SUGAR Cosmetics.
GLOW AND BEHOLD
Experimenting with the neon palette is a great way to add a playful twist to a traditional wedding look. “Think bright yellow eyeshadow with petal pink blush and lipstick or neon pink eyeliner with a rosebud mouth,” states Madhavi Irani, Chief Officer – Content, Nykaa.com. Opting for neon colours as a part of your bridal make-up is an easy way to add glam to your look. “Be it bright eyes, glitter details or vibrant pouts—these colours have much to offer. Also, they make pictures look lively,” feels Katyal.
WORK IT RIGHT
Working with neon colours in make-up can be daunting at first. “For bridal make-up, the go-to colours have always been reds and pinks. However, one can incorporate the neon trend by swiping on a matte bright yellow eyeshadow, highlighting the inner corner of the eyes or sporting bright pink on the lids. Pair it with a neutral outfit and lip colour. Alternatively, the bride can choose a classic palette for the big day, but pick neon for one of the pre-wedding functions,” proposes Singh. The laidback ambience at destination weddings inspires many to look beyond the traditional mood board. Samreen Samad, beauty expert at Bollyglow, suggests, “Play with an array of colours such as electric blue, neo mint, bright yellow, orange and fuchsia. If you want just a hint of it, use a neon eyeliner instead of going all out. Choose bright lip colours for a day function.” To re-work the beauty rules, Charmaine Rao Soares, make-up artist, Clarins, states, “Use neon-hued eyeliners or apply them on the inner corners of the eye for that pop of colour. Also, ensure that the rest of your look is dewy and minimal.”
The neon make-up trend will appeal to a bride who wants to make a statement. That said, Katyal recommends, “Highlight only one feature or you run the risk of looking tacky. Not all neon colours suit everyone so, one must try various colours to find the one that complements them.” To ace the trend, Samad advises: “Don’t mix together too many colours. If you’re applying eyeshadow, give the eyeliner and bright lipstick a miss. If you’re sporting a bright neon lip, keep your blush and eye make-up muted. The key is to have fun and be confident.” Since neon shades are vibrant, using too much of it, in terms of clothes or make-up, may look too flashy. Singh avers, “To ace your look, limit the pop of neon in your make-up, nails and outfit to just one or two elements.
