About Me
Kalki through the looking-glass

As we entered Amy Billimoria’s House of Design in Juhu, Mumbai, we knew we were not in Kansas anymore. The store exudes a happy feeling. From the décor of the store to the clothes housed within it, we could tell that this was going to be a departure from a traditional bridal makeover.

About Me
Sonam and Paras Modi share their marriage mantra…

We met at a common friend’s wedding in Lonavla, after which we started meeting almost twice a week with friends. We got along like a house on fire; it felt so comfortable talking to each other, it was like we were long lost friends. The initial courtship felt more like a game of hide and seek. We didn’t want to tell people yet as we were still getting to know each other.

Rakul Preet Singh: On the rise

Actor, golfer, entrepreneur—Rakul Preet Singh is an ambitious dynamo determined to live out her every passion

For many of us, the start of every year is paved with resolutions, determination and energy. The prospect of a new beginning drives us to assume new responsibilities and challenges. But for Rakul, the start of every new day fills her with fresh resolve and motivation to conquer the world. At this point, she’s working on six films and is shuttling among three cities. She reveals, “I’ve just wrapped up shooting for De De Pyaar De (2019), a Luv Ranjan film co-starring Ajay Devgn, which is due to release in March. I’ve begun shooting with Sidharth Malhotra for Milap Zaveri’s film, Marjaavaan. Currently, I am working on three Tamil films—one with Suriya called NGK, another with Karthi called Dev and a 100-crore sci-fi project.”

Juggling so many projects might seem overwhelming to some, however, Rakul is not one to feel daunted. “I love working, so I’ve built a life I don’t need a vacation from,” she claims. Not one to discount the hardships of juggling a career across three distinct industries, Rakul reasons, “Yes, it is tough, but at the same time it’s as simple as this: if there’s a good opportunity in Tamil or Telugu cinema, I don’t want to let go off it. So long as people want to see me on screen, I’m raring to do the work. I focus on my passions and that’s the only way I can work.” But certainly there must be stumbling blocks— perhaps in the form of language barriers, I ask? She explains, “One is capable of overcoming any hiccups in the pursuit of their dreams. Today, having done 16 Telugu films, I speak Telugu more frequently than I do Punjabi! If you enjoy your job, you enjoy the learning curve that comes with it.”

For now though, Rakul’s mind is set firmly on her upcoming projects— one of which is sure to draw all eyes on her. Her cameo as the late Sridevi, in NTR’s biopic, which is titled N.T.R. Kathanayakudu, has stirred up interest. The stakes are high for Rakul. She states, “To begin with, this is NTR’s biopic, not Srideviji’s; she debuted with NTR and so we’ve explored that part of her career. The idea was to recreate the scenes from those films with utmost honesty. This will be the first onscreen portrayal of her and given how she remains one of the biggest superstars the country has known, the interest levels have peaked.”

If you thought Rakul’s movie career was all that motivated her, she’ll have you know, “Films, fitness and food—my life revolves around these things. It’s wonderful that women today have become more aware of the fact that working out is not about being thin, but about being healthy.” Growing up, Rakul was an athlete and fitness was a way of life. She reveals, “I’ve been a national level golfer, played lawn tennis and badminton, and [know] swimming and horse riding. Today, I run three gyms and that’s the entrepreneurial side of me. Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle is what drives me. My advice to young to-be-weds, who are inspired by celebrity workouts, is simple: avoid fad diets. There are no shortcuts; it’s all about adapting healthy living.”

One of the most intriguing facets of Rakul is her unabashed candour on what motivates her. She reasons, “I am who I am and I don’t need to put on a façade. It’s important to let people see the real you, especially when your job entails being someone else on screen.”

As she continues to spread her wings in the world of cinema, we’ll keep a keen eye out for Rakul—the girl on the rise.
