Kalki through the looking-glass

As we entered Amy Billimoria’s House of Design in Juhu, Mumbai, we knew we were not in Kansas anymore. The store exudes a happy feeling. From the décor of the store to the clothes housed within it, we could tell that this was going to be a departure from a traditional bridal makeover.

About Me
Sonam and Paras Modi share their marriage mantra…

We met at a common friend’s wedding in Lonavla, after which we started meeting almost twice a week with friends. We got along like a house on fire; it felt so comfortable talking to each other, it was like we were long lost friends. The initial courtship felt more like a game of hide and seek. We didn’t want to tell people yet as we were still getting to know each other.

Must-do grooming treatments before your wedding day

Favoured for their long-term effects, these grooming treatments are what you need before taking off for your destination wedding

Flash That Smile

From gum contouring to teeth whitening, dental implants and veneers—there’s a lot to beam about in dental hygiene. Cosmetic dentist Dr Sunil Bhoolabhai shares, “Your teeth are your permanent asset that complement your lips and face. So without a doubt, dental hygiene is one of the most important aspects of the grooming regimen. Teeth whitening, closing gaps and cosmetically positioning crooked teeth are some of the procedures that can be taken into consideration.”

When to Start: He suggests, “If a procedure involves a significant amount of work such as fixing broken teeth or filling gaps, one must begin three to six months prior to give yourself time to grow accustomed to the makeover. Minor procedures such as whitening can be done 10 days before the wedding.”

Laser Show

Getting rid of unwanted body hair has become an important part of pre-wedding grooming routines. Risking cuts, burns or allergic reactions from hair removal creams has become a thing of the past— especially when its effects are temporary. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr Chytra V Anand, Founder, Kosmoderma Skin & Hair Clinic, shares, “Laser hair removal has become a popular choice for young brides-to-be because of its effective, pain-free and long-lasting effects that make it a more worthwhile alternative to waxing or threading. Brides, who are hosting destination weddings this season, might not have access to a good and reliable salon. Thus, laser hair removal is suitable if you’re looking for long-lasting effects.”

When to Start: Laser hair removal results cannot be achieved in one single session. Anand proposes, “It usually takes six to eight sittings to achieve maximum results. A person must ideally begin their treatment around six to eight months prior to their big day. In case of a time crunch, it is recommended to begin two to three months prior to the wedding.”

Fill It In

Dark, well-defined and shapely brows accentuate the eyes and highlight the face. And if it can be achieved in a way which lasts for long and doesn’t fade off after a swim or an intense workout session—what more could a bride ask for? Skin expert Dr Harshna Bijlani, Medical Head, The AgeLess Clinic, feels, “There are two popular techniques for semi-permanent eyebrow filling—one uses a brow machine, which is extremely popular in the US and Europe, and the other technique uses blades, which is popular in the Far East. Semi-permanent treatments are much more convenient than having to fill in your eyebrows before every function.” Cosmetic physician and founder of SkinLab, Dr Jamuna Pai, feels micro-blading works best for a destination bride. “Though it is a semi-permanent procedure, which requires regular top-ups and aftercare, the results can be long-lasting,” says Dr Pai. However, she strongly cautions, “Avoid waxing, threading or tweezing your brows a week before the treatment. Keep the treated area dry for 24 hours. The skin will flake off in a few days. But most important of all, choose a reputed clinic for the treatment. Remember, it is a semi-permanent procedure, so you need a well-trained and experienced physician.”

When to Start: To enjoy the perks of a 3D micro-pigmentation technique, Dr Bijlani advises booking an appointment either a month or two-three weeks before the wedding

Smooth Operator

Hair prep before your big day is just as important as any other. Correctly identifying your hair type and a professional consultation are essential before you commit to a chemicalladen treatment. Certain hair treatments with long-term effects are advisable because at a destination wedding you won’t have easy access to a salon or your stylist. Placid Braganza, hairstylist and owner, Placid Salon, informs, “Keratin and cysteine treatments can last for approximately three to six months. That said, it’s important to consider that not all hair types require such intensive chemical treatments. In fact, such treatments on fine or limp hair can compromise the hairstyle and make it appear flat.”

When to Start: Begin a few weeks before your big day as these treatments take a couple of weeks to start looking natural. Also, since these treatments last for about three to six months, it’s best to not get them done months in advance.
