Kalki through the looking-glass

As we entered Amy Billimoria’s House of Design in Juhu, Mumbai, we knew we were not in Kansas anymore. The store exudes a happy feeling. From the décor of the store to the clothes housed within it, we could tell that this was going to be a departure from a traditional bridal makeover.

About Me
Sonam and Paras Modi share their marriage mantra…

We met at a common friend’s wedding in Lonavla, after which we started meeting almost twice a week with friends. We got along like a house on fire; it felt so comfortable talking to each other, it was like we were long lost friends. The initial courtship felt more like a game of hide and seek. We didn’t want to tell people yet as we were still getting to know each other.

Looking for haldi décor inspiration? Swap the traditional genda phool for vibrant lemons

Luxury fashion influencer and bride Sonam Babani set out to do something exceptional and eco-conscious for her haldi ceremony. The main ingredient? Lemons!

When life gives you lemons, fashion influencer Sonam Babani suggests, turn them into pre-wedding décor! For her, lemons were an obvious choice. She explains, “Usually, for the first pre-wedding event (the haldi), people use a lot of warm hues. Most tend to use genda phool, but I wanted to do something out-of-the-box. So, I decided to use lemons.”

As it turned out, her decision was also a nod to tradition. She shares, “In Indian culture, lemons are known to ward off evil. And this was felt throughout the event.” Plus, lemons are sustainable. “After the event, we sent them to our friends and family, who made jams from it and used it to make other treats. We also sent some to an NGO,” notes Babani, as she explains how the décor was recycled.

“We wanted to be thoughtful [while designing] our décor,” she avers, encouraging everyone to consider more sustainable choices for their wedding ceremonies.
