Lingerie guide for the millennial bride
Nothing pulls down a bride’s look more than ill-fitted innerwear and visible panty lines and straps. So, here are some expert tips to help you pick out lingerie that is both, functional and fashionable
Lingerie is the foundation of your bridal look as it provides comfort, support and shape. “Comfort can be achieved by finding the right size and style. Once the size is ascertained, the next step must focus on fabric. As lingerie sits on the skin all day long, choose soft, breathable fabric,” suggests Smita Murarka, Marketing Head, amanté and Ultimo India.
Finding the perfect lingerie and choosing the right style of lingerie to complement the occasion are important factors. While many brides prefer to purchase their innerwear after completing their fitness regimens and dropping a few sizes, it’s still advisable to shop for your lingerie a month-and-a-half before your big day. “Despite your diet, once the wedding festivities begin, your body will pack on some pounds. Moreover, you want your lingerie to fit comfortably and last through the honeymoon period and after,” points Sapna Shehrawat, CEO, La Perla India.
PRETTY LITTLE DETAILS
Brides are often torn between matching their lingerie to their skin tone or the colour of their bridal ensemble. Shruti Behal, Head of Product Design— lingerie, nightwear, swimwear and activewear, PrettySecrets, feels, “Dresses with deep necklines should be paired with plunge bras, whereas backless gowns and dresses call for backless and convertible bras. Slim fit garments can be paired with a seamless bra and high waist shapewear bikini or thongs or seamless panty styles to avoid any bulge or visible panty lines. With pastel coloured garments, the lingerie must match your skin tone, whereas darker and brightly coloured garments should be paired with lingerie that matches the colour of the dress.” The wide range of styles available proves that there’s a bra for nearly every silhouette. Murarka adds, “Garments with deep necklines must be paired with a balconette bra to ensure there is no underwear peeping out. In case of a strapless look, pick a convertible bra for styling options and optimum support. If you want defined shape for your wedding day look, choose classic shapewear; it provides support and the wide back wings smoothen out bulges to create definition and a slimmer look.”
The right size not only ensures comfort, but also fills you with confidence. “A too-snug bra will create unwanted bulges, whereas a loose bra will cause the band to ride up. On your wedding day, you need the support of good lingerie to help you get through the day,” feels Murarka. In addition to that, Behal warns that wearing the wrong size for too long can be hazardous to your physical well-being. “A bra that is too tight can cause painful bruises and rashes under the bust, while a piece that is too loose can lead to sagging. If the band rides too high, it can cause back ache and exert pressure on the spine, which have been known to cause headaches,” she asserts.
Size and comfort notwithstanding, there’s a sense of indulgence associated with bridal lingerie. Shehrawat states, “Nothing is as sensuous as lace or silk undergarments. A bride needs to feel her best—inside out—and nothing is more luxurious than silk and pure lace. For the young bride-to-be, I recommend two essentials: shapewear, which is a must-have not only on your big day, but also for later. There are days you’ll feel bloated and at those times, shapewear is your ticket to feeling comfortable. Secondly, the trend du jouris corset bras, which are versatile as you can wear them as innerwear and outerwear. Lacy bodysuits and corsets as blouses are trending, which also makes it a wise investment.”
