Kalki through the looking-glass

As we entered Amy Billimoria’s House of Design in Juhu, Mumbai, we knew we were not in Kansas anymore. The store exudes a happy feeling. From the décor of the store to the clothes housed within it, we could tell that this was going to be a departure from a traditional bridal makeover.

About Me
Sonam and Paras Modi share their marriage mantra…

We met at a common friend’s wedding in Lonavla, after which we started meeting almost twice a week with friends. We got along like a house on fire; it felt so comfortable talking to each other, it was like we were long lost friends. The initial courtship felt more like a game of hide and seek. We didn’t want to tell people yet as we were still getting to know each other.

Girl on the Rise: Sobhita Dhulipala

Success hasn’t come easy to Sobhita Dhulipala, who recently rose to fame with a highly acclaimed digital web series—and there’s been no looking back since. Real, relatable and refreshing, the sultry beauty takes us through the makings of her newfound success

Sobhita radiates a welcome sense of calm while displaying a natural confidence in front of the camera—qualities that are usually brought about by years of experience and a magnitude of work. And so, it’s hard to believe that her career in Bollywood began only three years ago with Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016). Her debut, directed by the acclaimed Anurag Kashyap, featured co-star Vicky Kaushal; this was followed by Chef (2017) and Kaalakaandi (2018)— both co-starring Saif Ali Khan. Despite her astute choices in cinema, it was only recently that Sobhita catapulted to fame, becoming an overnight sensation with her digital venture, Made In Heaven (2019).

Speaking of her sudden meteoric rise to stardom, she recollects, “I signed Made in Heaven at a time when the digital medium hadn’t completely boomed in India. I loved the stories and the authenticity this medium represented. I’m most at ease when taking risks and in this case, I’m glad it turned out well for me!” From Made in Heaven to Bard of Blood, she’s truly uncovered the potential of the digital platform. Unfazed by the rush of stardom that has come her way, she reveals, “I have a volatile heart (sic) and don’t treat myself like a commodity. I sign projects only because they move me. I look for authenticity of emotions and relevance to reality; I am thrilled if scripts include a social commentary of some kind.”

Currently, Sobhita is shooting with Dulquer Salmaan for Kurup, a Malayalam movie directed by Srinath Rajendran. In addition to that, she’s also completed shooting for Netflix’s Ghost Stories with Anurag Kashyap. “Beginning January, I’ll be shooting two films; I’m very charged [up],” she exclaims. As the demand for bilingual films grows, an excited Sobhita declares, “As a girl hailing from Andhra [Pradesh] who thinks in English, speaks in Telugu and works in Hindi and now Malayalam [cinema], I am truly excited about the breakthrough regional cinema is witnessing. We live in a mishmash world and crossovers are needed; it is almost the new normal!”

Model, crowned beauty and actor—it has been a vibrant six years for Sobhita; a journey shaped by hard work and patience. Speaking of her personal evolution, she shares, “I was in my final year of college when I took up pageantry. I followed that up with modelling because fashion, in general, excites me. However, I still longed for more; I felt as though I had more to say. I have always been interested in narratives and storytelling through literature or classical dance; so, through trials and tribulations, I figured that acting was my true calling. I went on countless auditions and, in retrospect, they helped me toughen up. The rejection can seem imposing and make one question their ability and even identity, but I kept at it. I guess, the only way out is through [it]. Today, I look back at my journey with gratitude because I have been enriched by it.”

Be it her unconventionally striking features or that take-you-by-surprise skillset, Sobhita is profoundly fascinating and quite the beauty with brains. But, indisputably, her winning feature is her conviction and confidence to stay true to herself. “The best part about being an actor is that it deepens your empathy. I want to tell wonderful stories and live well. That’s all I know for sure,” she reveals, adding, “I wake up with a ‘thank you’ prayer every morning bearing in mind that I have so much going my way when compared to so many people in the world who don’t even have basic [amenities]. I remind myself that life is short. We are born, live a little and die. [We] might as well have a good time.”
