About Me
When singer Akriti Kakar tied the knot.

Listening to Akriti Kakar talk about her significant other feels like they’ve been together forever.

About Me
Kalki through the looking-glass

As we entered Amy Billimoria’s House of Design in Juhu, Mumbai, we knew we were not in Kansas anymore. The store exudes a happy feeling. From the décor of the store to the clothes housed within it, we could tell that this was going to be a departure from a traditional bridal makeover.

About Me
Sonam and Paras Modi share their marriage mantra…

We met at a common friend’s wedding in Lonavla, after which we started meeting almost twice a week with friends. We got along like a house on fire; it felt so comfortable talking to each other, it was like we were long lost friends. The initial courtship felt more like a game of hide and seek. We didn’t want to tell people yet as we were still getting to know each other.

Décor ideas for art lovers

For couples who appreciate art and are looking to build a collection together, these insights from experts will help you get started

Find your collection

When it comes to selecting art, there’s no science to it. Most experts suggest acquiring pieces that you find beautiful, that uplift your spirits and/or resonate with your personalities. Pooja Poddar, founder of a home store, says, “Every artwork has a story to tell and if you can connect with it and if it complements the décor of your home, it’s a good way to start.” For others with a more deep-seated interest in art, it’s essential that you study the artist’s background, body of work and potential for appreciation, first.

Up the wall

Once you’re ready to display your objets d’art, identify a focal wall or walls depending on the number of pieces you plan to display and hang them at eye level. Reshma Jani and Shwetambari Soni, co-owners of an online boutique art service, explain, “The first thing to keep in mind is that the artwork must be proportionate to the size of the wall. The perfect size for a 6-foot-wide wall is a 4×4 feet or a 3×4 feet artwork that will fill the wall and still leave enough room on the sides. And you needn’t restrict yourself to one piece per wall, as a series of small works by the same artist or different artists from the same genre can look spectacular.”

Remember that no matter how stunning a piece might be, if it isn’t well illuminated you will fail to achieve the result you are striving for. “Place spotlights above the artwork or on the ceiling to draw attention to the core areas of the painting,” adds Poddar.

Exude positive energy

While it’s believed that items exude energy, art is no exception. Nipun Soin, founder of an art gallery, states, “Every piece of art emanates some form of energy that can positively or negatively affect the couple. I’d recommend nature, landscapes or even abstract themes for a couple’s home. Depictions of war, bloodshed and destruction should be avoided.”

Thoughtful investments

Depending on your level of commitment and budget, Jani and Soni recommend three categories of artists for your investment portfolio, “The first kind of artists to invest in are the blue-chip artists, whose value keeps appreciating with time. The second category consists of established artists whose value is consistent and growing slowly. The third category consists of new and emerging artists that are affordable and inexpensive and will in all likelihood grow in value and popularity over time.”

  • Check that the colour/paint is not embedded on a canvas print
  • The signature of the respective artist should be present on the painting, along with the details of the painting including theme, dimensions, year, medium, etc
  • Documented provenance confirming its authenticity, along with emails, etc
  • Insure your art
  • Direct sunlight and excess moisture can damage art
  • Carefully inspect your piece for damages like cuts and cracks, which can be cleverly camouflaged
  • Store art in a safe and dry space
  • Buy art from a trusted and renowned gallery or seller
