About Me
Kalki through the looking-glass

As we entered Amy Billimoria’s House of Design in Juhu, Mumbai, we knew we were not in Kansas anymore. The store exudes a happy feeling. From the décor of the store to the clothes housed within it, we could tell that this was going to be a departure from a traditional bridal makeover.

About Me
Sonam and Paras Modi share their marriage mantra…

We met at a common friend’s wedding in Lonavla, after which we started meeting almost twice a week with friends. We got along like a house on fire; it felt so comfortable talking to each other, it was like we were long lost friends. The initial courtship felt more like a game of hide and seek. We didn’t want to tell people yet as we were still getting to know each other.

The Fitness Fight

Find out how brides have been sweating it out over the past few decades

While getting in shape is a priority for to-be brides, ‘the shape’, so to speak, has been changing over the years. To trace this evolving silhouette, veteran fitness trainers reveal the workouts that have reigned over the last four decades.

During the 80s, Bollywood was teeming with curvy femme fatales. From Vyjayanthimala Bali to Hema Malini and Asha Parekh, the leading ladies proudly flaunted their hourglass figures during the early 1980s. According to Leena Mogre, director of Leena Mogre’s Fitness, as the decade inched forward, people started favouring a leaner figure like that of Jane Fonda, who revolutionised the fitness scene with her videos and fashion sense.

THE REGIMEN: Alongside the craze for Fonda’s lean physique grew the love for aerobics. “Even I began my career in fitness as an

aerobics instructor because it was so big at that time,” says Mogre, as she recalls the demand for leotards and leg warmers.

THE DIET: This was the decade of fad diets. “Everyone was reading a book called Fit for Life by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond that served up suggestions like ‘eat only fruits till noon’,” shares Mogre.

LEARNING: The obsession with aerobics and a lopsided approach to nutrition took a toll on some people, who went overboard with their fitness routines. “Those who overdid it with aerobics are now stressing about knee replacement surgeries,” says holistic coach Mickey Mehta.

If weight gain is your fitness prerogative, here’s a checklist designed to help you pack on the pounds. From challenges to solutions—this is the skinny person’s guide to gaining weight

Often, any talk of weight gain attempts are met with amazement. What’s even more baffling to some is the suggestion that a ‘skinny’ person could be subject to body shaming. “In matters of weight management, gaining weight is just as challenging as losing it. The problem of weight depends not only on the amount of food one eats, but also their nutrients and mineral intake. Any weight gain effort before your big day will require a lifestyle change with regard to nutritional intake. You must include diverse food items with adequate percentages of carb, protein and fat. Adequate nutrition, regular exercise and an informed plan will help you attain the desired body frame,” declares celebrity nutritionist and dietician Nmami Agarwal.

The important question to address is whether the weight gain is fat or muscle. “Muscle weight can be gained by means of nourishing your body through balanced diet and exercise. Be it gaining or losing weight—it all depends on your metabolism, training regimen, eating habits, gender, age, medical condition, and of course, body type,” shares fitness expert Prayas Kharbadikar, an influencer at BeardBoy Fitness.

Being a Retro Chic bride

Drawing inspiration from the 60s, designer Jhelum Gopal Dalvi gives our Mumbai-based reader a classic makeover

We are at the multi designer store Jhelum, for our bridal makeover with bride-to-be Saloni Gala, a makeup artist by profession, based in Mumbai.

The Look: Jhelum Dalvi

We wanted to go for a look that defines the bride of today—a fearless woman with a willingness to experiment. We chose a fishtail skirt paired with a simple choli and dupatta that could be draped like a sari à la Mumtaz and Asha Parekh. The outfit is predominantly made from luxurious khadi silks, like khadi tussar silk. The blouse and fishtail skirt are quilted with sequins giving it a retro feel.
