MAKING GAINS

Often, any talk of weight gain attempts are met with amazement. What’s even more baffling to some is the suggestion that a ‘skinny’ person could be subject to body shaming. “In matters of weight management, gaining weight is just as challenging as losing it. The problem of weight depends not only on the amount of food one eats, but also their nutrients and mineral intake. Any weight gain effort before your big day will require a lifestyle change with regard to nutritional intake. You must include diverse food items with adequate percentages of carb, protein and fat. Adequate nutrition, regular exercise and an informed plan will help you attain the desired body frame,” declares celebrity nutritionist and dietician Nmami Agarwal.

The important question to address is whether the weight gain is fat or muscle. “Muscle weight can be gained by means of nourishing your body through balanced diet and exercise. Be it gaining or losing weight—it all depends on your metabolism, training regimen, eating habits, gender, age, medical condition, and of course, body type,” shares fitness expert Prayas Kharbadikar, an influencer at BeardBoy Fitness.

Twenty minutes of EMS training equals to three hours at the gym—that’s the kind of maths we love. EMS or Electric Muscle Stimulation is fuelling the fitness world with the promise of achieving just that. This total body workout has enthralled celebrities and supermodels, making it one of the fastest growing fitness trends of the season. “In conventional training, muscles are contracted by means of signals received from the brain (via the central nervous system), which are similar to electrical signals. Since your muscles cannot distinguish if the signals are from the brain or an external source, fitness experts devised EMS training, wherein the contractions are enhanced by external impulses making the workout very intense and effective,” explains Samir Purohit, Co-founder, The Pilates Studio.

Regarded as the future of fitness, EMS has found a fan base that includes the likes of Madonna and Heidi Klum. Closer to home, our fitness conscious Bollywood crew has started to adopt this form of exercise. Purohit explains why it’s caught on: “We have about 650+ muscles in our body. In an EMS session, at any given time, one works almost 90 per cent of all the muscles. This is impossible to achieve during any conventional weight training session. In EMS training, deeper muscles are trained; therefore, the training produces changes much more rapidly and effectively than conventional weight training. The fatigue level during an EMS session is very high, so after a session, it’s important to rest for a minimum of three days.”
