Add a lavish touch to your home decor
Any apartment can be transformed into an opulent retreat with just a few striking details. FWT shows you how to ensure that your home exudes luxury and relaxation
“Small things make a big impact in making homes look opulent. The idea these days is to keep the interiors simple and elegant and play with accessories to add character. Opulence comes with a sense of space such as floating furniture, intelligent use of glass and wall mirrors, and openness, which implies effective use of day light; no part of the house should be too busy or cluttered,” says Rashi Bajaj, Principal Designer and Proprietor, Carpet Couture. Some things remain common for any room. For instance, picking the right mood lighting can make a huge difference to your home. Low-wattage bulbs or even tinted pink lights can cast a glow around any room and instantly make the space look not just luxurious, but also romantic. Natural light during the day can be a wonderful highlight for crystal statues, art and embellishments.
“As far as colour is concerned, think rich palettes or jewel tones. In terms of colours, gold, white, black are three hues that reflect and add luxury to any room. White reflects elegance, black is the colour of charm and gold has the appeal of royalty. By simply incorporating these themes in your home, the plush look that you have always been looking for is achieved,” says Meenakshi Taneja, Executive Director, Casa Shamuzzi, India. Use statement pieces that stand out in each room. Bright, colourful cushions can enliven any room. “Statuettes can be in a variety of materials like mosaic, jade and crystal, and can add a touch of glamour to any space,” says Rakhi Mahajan, Joint Brand Director, Ishana—The Conscience One. Another way of adding panache to your home is to paint the doors and window panes in a stark colour like black, as it instantaneously adds appeal. Even flat panel doors exhibit a richer look with black polish. Be careful while adding the sparkle effect in any room and ensure that it is not overdone. Just one to two décor pieces add enough luxury to any room. “A home full of art instantly screams luxury living. If you’re not able to dress your walls with expensive art, you can still find some great bargains to give that luxury feel. Photography is huge right now, so is contemporary art. Rather than heading to the same bog-standard homeware shops, look a little further. Pop across to that hip art gallery down the road. It may set you back a little more, but it instantly creates individuality and puts your home right in the luxury bracket,” says Meenakshi.
One thing that can really add a sense of opulence to your room is an ornate gilded mirror, the bigger the better. In addition to making any room look spacious, it also adds elegance and changes the look of a room. Intricate wallpaper can also add an unusual touch. But if you prefer paints, get a variety of metallic or pearl or iridescent finishes that can be used for the whole room or even on an accent wall. In fact, if you want to add some drama to the room, opt for pitch-black paint. Leather chairs perfectly complement the intensity of black paint perfect for the couple who revels in bold decorating choices. But if you really want to change not just the look, but also the feel of the room, then try using rich, opulent fabrics like velvet, damask, brocade, toile de jouy, lace, and of course, silk and satin for your furnishing. Carved wood screens, unique vintage or antique chairs, paired sconces, gorgeous chandelier, stunning coffee tables, vintage silver, herringbone floors, poufs and exquisite accessories can make the room look uber glamourous. A carpet can make a difference too. “As viscose is a cost-effective substitute for silk, look at viscose rugs to offer plushness. If you are not price conscious and are looking for an heirloom piece, then go for a contemporary hand-knotted carpet,” says Rashi. And if you want to make the room comfortable as well as luxurious, get in a chaise, which was a symbol of opulence and high society in 16th century France and makes lounging around stylish.
Enhance this room with unique touches such as high gloss paint, pretty chandelier, silk window treatments and luxurious fabrics that feel as lush on your hand as they do to the eye. Never underestimate the super luxurious feeling that high thread count sheets, fluffy comforters and pillows or luxury mattresses can give to a room. Monogrammed or custom-made sheets are other alternatives. “Add sophisticated wall coverings—from textured, metallic colours to wallpaper, and satin velvet touch colours,” says Shivika Bhasin, Manager, Hülsta, Delhi. “Mirrors help add glamour because reflective surfaces make the room look big, bright and luxurious too.” If you really want to go all out, try a hand-painted ceiling. It’s one-of-a-kind conversation starter. Ambient lighting works well here. “Recessed lighting in your bedroom casts an even glow as opposed to a fluorescent light fixture. Use side lamps for task lighting, and consider installing a dimmer for overhead lighting. By controlling the lighting in your bedroom, the mood can go from bright and energetic to soothing or romantic,” says Meenakshi. Alternatively, you can create a contemporary modern look by fixing pretty pendant light fixtures from the ceiling right above your bed. “A daybed can be camouflaged as a sofa with stylish pillows and finished off with a storage ottoman/coffee table, and no one will know it is transformed into a bed at night!” says Shivika. A really interesting touch is to do up the headboard of your bed either with LED lights or you can even use some semiprecious stones, luxe suede or gorgeous embroidery or wallpaper to create the headboard.
SERVING UP SOME STYLE IN THE KITCHEN
Try including an art form that can give your kitchen a whimsical perspective. No longer restricted to church windows or cathedrals, stained glass windows, doors and light fixtures capture light to create enchanting effects. In addition, glass-painted flooring is also a trend that’s fast catching on. For a visually stunning yet highly functional kitchen, Shivika suggests opting for contemporary style island kitchens, well-lit pendant lamps on the ceiling, marble tiled floors, granite worktops, sheer kitchen curtains and vibrant colours and finishes. “Cabinets with hand-carved details can add a personal touch to the space,” says Rakhi. Let your dining room or kitchen shine all day and night with the use of reflective accents.
MAKE A STATEMENT WITH STRIKING BATHROOMS
When it comes to adding opulence, it doesn’t get plusher than a wall or floor covered in beautifully coloured stone. Coloured marble or mosaic tiles add to the luxe factor. Mother-of-pearl inlay work or other semi-precious stones can be worked into the décor to look stunning such as an onyx sink and counter top. Velvet-upholstered chairs, gold fixtures, gilded mirrors and polished floors combine to make the space relaxing, yet indulgent.
